Jamaica 50 Festivities in South Florida to Peak in Park
South Florida’s celebration of Jamaica’s 50th independence anniversary will climax at the staging of the annual Jamaica Independence & Cultural Celebration (JICC), scheduled for Sunday, August 5 from noon. to 10:00 p.m. at Miramar Regional Park, 16801 Miramar Parkway. This highly anticipated event promises exciting entertainment, interactive activities and a variety of delicious Jamaican food, guaranteed to deliver amusement for the entire family.
The event has been designated as an “Official Celebratory Event” and “Global Site” by the Jamaica 50 Secretariat and will capture live activities in Jamaica, London & Canada which will be televised on a giant screen in the park. Presented by telecommunications giant LIME, the celebrations will feature the music, food, lifestyle, and customs of Jamaica during a fun-filled day in the park. As in past years, patrons are encouraged to “wear yuh colours” – the Jamaican national colors of Black, Gold and Green, to demonstrate their patriotic pride.
Adults and kids alike can participate in the day’s activities – Mento and Ska Dance contests, traditional games such as marbles, jacks, dandy shandy and hop-scotch. The more active can participate in the hoola-hoop contest, sack race and egg & spoon race for prizes. Another feature of the event will be the “Tribute to the Jamaican Athletes” who will be on the world stage at the London Olympics. This special attraction will highlight Jamaica’s success at the Olympics beginning in London in 1948 up to 2008 in Beijing.
Headlining the entertainment package is the notable Fab 5, Jamaica’s most popular live band who have been topping charts and receiving international recognition for more than 40 years.
